Dozens of people were displaced from their homes on Sunday night following a fire that ripped through their apartment complex located in Taunton, MA.
The fire began around 9pm at the Chateau Estates building located at 102 Hart Street. The building has 24-units, with a total of 30 people living there. The flames became so intense that fire fighters called it a three alarm blaze.
Four long hours later, the fire was finally under control. But the building certainly did not escape serious damage by that point. The majority of units within the building suffered serious damage or were totally destroyed, and a portion of the building's roof completely collapsed.
At the time of the report, it was unclear how the fire started, but investigators believe it originated in the attic. Luckily, no one was reported hurt or missing, with the exception of two fire fighters who suffered minor injuries while battling the inferno.
Estimated damages caused by the fire are between $250,000 and $500,000, and officials said that with the combination of smoke damage, water damage, a caved roof and major electrical problems, the building is uninhabitable.
A number of things can be learned by this tragedy. First and foremost, the proper master policy insurance would at least ensure that this building can be repaired or replaced. All-in coverage, such as the coverage that Brownstone Insurance offers, would insure the building and all of its common areas as well as anything attached to it, i.e. cabinets, walls, appliances, etc.
Secondly, adequate renter's or condo unit owner's insurance is highly recommended. This coverage would insure all of your personal belongings and assets such as: furniture, clothing, electronics, etc.
Following a tragedy such as this, wouldn't you prefer to have the peace of mind that your assets are insured and you'll be reimbursed for them and able to continue on with your life with as little struggle as possible?
Before tragedy strikes, protect yourself and the personal property you've worked so hard to accumulate with adequate insurance. You'll be thankful you did.
