Most of Rhode Island and Massachusetts are being battered today by gusty winds and strong rain storms. Before you have to deal with water backup in your basement or mold in your attic, here are a few simple tips to take into consideration during weather like this:
- Make sure your skylight windows are closed all the way and sealed tight. Check the weather stripping around the window every few months to make sure it's still in good condition so that a leak does not occur.
- Make sure your gutters are free of debris. Clogged gutters prevent rain from properly irrigating away from your property, making it more likely that damage will occur in some manner. Take a peek at them every few weeks to make sure they are free and clear from things like leaves and branches. Hire a professional to clean gutters that you cannot reach safely.
- If you own property with a basement that has been known to take in water during heavy rain storms, make sure you have a sump pump that is operational. Sump pumps usually fail for two reasons: the pump automatically shuts off once the water level becomes too low for it to remain operational, or there is debris in the water.
