By enlarge, Generation Y, or the Millennials as they have been called, have been characterized by a unique set of values that blend exceedingly well with the Independent Agency System. Generation Y has been categorized in the following way: desire to do meaningful work, entrepreneurial spirit, communication skills, ingrained knowledge of technology, and a positive group mentality. Couple this with the economic turmoil of the last few years and more recent college grads are exploring the insurance industry as a career option.
And in a graying industry this is increasingly important. MAIA certainly considered this when deciding whether or not to revitalize the Young Agents Committee (YAC) in 2011. The top three reasons committee members noted about why they wanted to be involved were:
A few of us worked on building those friendships while giving back to the community this week at the Greater Boston Food Bank. We had a great time and look forward to coordinating similar outings in the future with more of our Massachusetts Young Agents.
As the YAC Staff Liaison, I have had the pleasure of getting to know this group in the last few months and I’m excited about the momentum they have going and plans we’ve been working on for this year and next.
Want to be involved? Young Agents and those interested in starting a career in the insurance industry are invited to the first YAC After-Hours Networking Event on Thursday, June 16th from 5:30pm - 8:00pm at Bar Louie @ Patriot's Place, Foxboro, MA. RSVP here.
Melissa Murphy is Marketing Specialist and is the Young Agents Committee Staff Liaison at the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA).
